1) The consensus of the infosec community is that Telegram is significantly less secure than @SignalApp.

2) Signal is an independent non-profit with a $50m endowment—they can't be meaningfully influenced by money for a very long time. Telegram is a standard private company. t.co/d6nskMRxyP

@Stellar @icedquinn @snowden

Isn't signal open source? Has anyone tried to build a federated version?

I know some are using the encryption.

@jamesmullarkey @snowden @Stellar @icedquinn A federated version would need to rewrite part of the server for federation, it wouldn't be able to use the official client and it wouldn't be able to talk with the users on the official server.

Or one can use xmpp with omemo (the same encryption of signal), which is already there.
@jamesmullarkey @Stellar @snowden people have tried to do things with the signal codebase but since mox won't allow federation, the network effect ends up killing it.

it's open source in the most technically correct sense, but there is zero approval from upstream to actually use it that way.
Isn't Telegram a "standard" private company that owns surreal amounts of cryptocurrency?
