No matter how well-intentioned, @Apple is rolling out mass surveillance to the entire world with this. Make no mistake: if they can scan for kiddie porn today, they can scan for anything tomorrow.

Software that surreptitiously scans its users' files for forbidden documents based on hashes isn't a new idea. Apple (and the others newly getting into it) are just following the path already laid down by China:



TL;DR: Your iPhone will scan itself for child porn and give Apple access to your data if it's confident it has a match. Some worry that Apple will scan for other data later—leaked docs, political dissent, closeted homosexuality.

But they've always had near-full control of our devices; not much has changed. Pick one to trust: Apple, Google, or a tiny Linux phone/de-Googled Android community. Maybe no phone is best phone...
